Learn to Ski Festival 2010

Sunday, January 3th to Thursday, January 7th, 2010

This program is an annual event sponsored by Vancouver Island Society for Adaptive Snowsports and Mt. Washington Resort on Vancouver Island. It is traditionally held in the second week in January.

This program is offered to people with disabilities who would like to expand their horizons and learn an exhilarating sport which can become a lifelong family activity.

Anyone over the age of 6 years and who has some ability to learn is welcome. We offer novice lessons in downhill, snowboard or cross country skiing as well as a ski improvement segment if you have some experience.

We are able to accept a maximum of 35 students; however " first time" applicants will be given priority in selection of participants.

Applications must be received by December 16th, 2009.

22nd Annual Herb Bradley Coca-Cola Classic - Sunday, February 7th

The Herb Bradley Coca Cola Classic is VISAS's principal fund raising event of the year.

On the first Sunday of February we invite businesses, service clubs and individuals willing to support us to come to the mountain and participate in our HBCC Guesstimation event.

The entry fee for the event is $250 for each team. The teams are made of three people selected by the sponsor and one athlete with a disability. We ask each time to give us their best guess on how long it will take all of their members to complete the course. The course is run and a very gentle slope.

The day also includes a lunch, and an awards ceremony. Each team receives three lift passes, tickets for the buffet, and draw tickets… and the guarantee that the day will be a lot of fun.

This is an inaugural event hosted by Vancouver Island Society for Adaptive Snowsport (VISAS) and Mt. Washington Resort on Vancouver Island BC. It provides the opportunity for disabled members of the Canadian Forces to return to a sport they may once have enjoyed or to introduce them to a winter sport, which may become a lifelong family actively.

VISAS is a volunteer group with 80 Alpine, Nordic and Snowboard instructors. Many of them retired military and all of them are dedicated to “bringing the mountain” to people with disabilities. We are a non-profit organization focused on providing Nationally certified Instructors to assist physically or mentally challenged individuals.

A few members our members have taught each spring in Aspen Colorado in support of an American Disabled Veterans Winter Sports Clinic. In 2006 these instructors with the support of our Society initiated a program which included disabled members of the CF. The program has slowly grown and it was decided to offer a dedicated Veterans program in February 2009.

This learn to ski clinic has been made possible by the financial support of the

  • Soldier On Program
  • The Wound Warriors Program
  • The Comox, Courtenay & Cumberland Branches                                             of the Royal Canadian Legions
  • and the 888 Wing RCAF Association, Comox.
